The Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, located along the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka near Bentota, is a renowned conservation center dedicated to the protection of endangered sea turtles. Established in the early 1980s, the hatchery plays a vital role in preserving five species of marine turtles that nest along the Sri Lankan coastline Green, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, and Leatherback. The hatchery operates by collecting vulnerable turtle eggs laid on nearby beaches and incubating them in a protected environment to increase their chances of survival. Visitors can learn about the life cycle of turtles, observe hatchlings, and even witness or participate in the safe release of baby turtles into the ocean, typically done in the early evening. In addition to hatchlings, the hatchery also cares for injured or disabled turtles, offering them rehabilitation or lifelong protection if they cannot return to the wild. Through guided tours, educational exhibits, and community outreach, the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery raises awareness about marine conservation while offering a unique and meaningful experience to tourists.
