Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is Sri Lanka’s first capital and the cradle of Sinhala civilization. Founded in the 4th century BCE, it flourished for over a thousand years as the religious and political heart of the island. This sacred city is home to the Sri Maha Bodhi, the oldest documented tree in the world, grown from the very tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Among its vast archaeological remains are colossal stupas like Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya, intricate irrigation systems, and ancient monastic complexes. Anuradhapura continues to be a living heritage site, revered by Buddhists and admired by history lovers alike.
